Maherida Beach, Everything you Should Know!

Maherida beach is very small but one of the prettiest beaches located 14 km northeast of Chania. From the Chorafakia village, it is located 1k west.

What makes this beach so popular is the paradise and breathtaking landscapes. Since it is hidden in a rocky bay and surrounded by crystal turquoise sea, visiting this tiny beach will make you feel like you are in paradise.

There is a unique story about the beach name. The beach is actually named after the Greek word “machairi”, which translates to a knife. Since the rocky cape in the northern end of the beach looks exactly like a knife, we can agree that this is an appropriate name. However, there is one more version of the story. Many people think that the beach got its name from the special knife flower (Gladiolis italicus) that grows in that area.

The beauty of the bay

The bay is very isolated and calm since it is faced southwest. The wild beaches, in general, hide their own untouched beauty, and there is no difference when we talk about this one. In the center of the bay, there is a perfect white sand beach surrounded by stunning rock forms and crystal blue water. The water is incredibly clear, so you can dive and enjoy the incredible sea world full of tiny fish. It is also very deep, so if you like diving this is the perfect place for you.

The coastline and area next to the beach are protected habitats since there is Tersana lake. This is a huge attraction in this area because it looks like a crater from where the brackish water springs. The Tersana lake is a habitat for different species of turtles, snakes, and fish birds. Also, in the Macherida biotope are a lot of different wild animals.
